A KnuckleHead's Guide to RTCW Movie Making
 by [NW]Knuckles

Required Programs I used to make my Movies:

Optional Software

  • I used Winamp for some sound file conversion
  • Seismovision to play back and view Demos (has fast forward and Slo-mo)

Tutorial

  • Step 1: I'm assuming you already have a demo made you want to output to a movie file.
The first thing you must do is install the Divx Codec on your PC.
Next you need to alter your config to output screenshots at 30 frames a second
    add to your Wolfconfig_mp:
    bind F5: " cg_drawgun 1; cg_drawTeamOverlay 0; cg_drawStatus 0; cg_drawcompass 0; cg_drawtimer 0; cg_fov 110;wait; cl_avidemo 30" bind F6: " cl_avidemo 0; cg_drawTeamOverlay 1; cg_drawStatus 1; cg_drawcompass 1; cg_drawtimer 1; cg_fov 90 You want to use a fairly generic Wolf config file that has not been tweaked too much. Remember you want the full effect of explosions etc in your video. Most tweaked configs have removed those effects.
I have a Wolfconfig I use for movies you can download here: http://www.naked-warriors.com/moviefiles/wolfconfig_mp.cfg
You want the Wolfconfig you use to not have too dark a video display. The settings I use work well for me.
Make sure to go into RTCW and set your screen display to 640x480. That seems to work best. It is the size your screens will be output.

  • Step 2: Actually starting to make the video clip: After you have your config setup, start watching the demo you want to make the video of. The output .TGA screenshots will be very large in size (average 900k per screen) that means if you have it set to output 30 frames a second. 30 screenshots .TGA files so that's 900k x 30 per second. Be aware of this so you don't fill up your hard drive. I normally do short clips out of a demo like an action scene or something.
Ok, so you are playing the demo and come to the spot where you made an amazing shot with your pistol and wiped out a whole clan with one singe shot ! A great clip to add to your video. Right as you get to that part of the video hit "F5" in your config that will begin to output the screenshot TGA files to your /RTCW/Main/Screenshots folder. After you get to the point you want to stop capturing hit "F6" to stop the output of TGA's

  • Step 3: Converting TGA screenshots to JPEG's This is when you will need to use PaintShop Pro to Batch convert all your TGA files to Jpeg that are in your /RTCW/Main/Screenshots folder. You can download a trial of PSP here.
Start PSP go to File/Batch Conversion. Choose to output to Jpeg, select all files in your  /RTCW/Main/Screenshots folder and choose to output jpeg's to folder called C: \Output

  • Step 4: Editing your JPEG screenshots before making video
This is where the WindowsXP File Explorer comes in handy. Go to your C: \Output  folder with File Explorer Click on "View" on the toolbar and choose "Thumbnails" now you can browse the Jpegs you may want to delete out of your scene for the video.

  • Step 5: Making your AVI from your JPEG screenshots
This is where you will need to have Jpeg2Video installed. Start Jpeg2Video. After installing the progam you need to configure Jpeg2video. Select to output at 30 frames a second and make sure to choose your Divx codec you installed. Divx codec will give you the best video quality at the smallest file size. On average a 2 minute video compressed with Divx will be about 20Megs in size.
Select your C: \Output directory and start making your avi file. You will now have a file called Jpegvideo.avi.  This is your first clip, Now repeat the process for each clip you want to put in your movie.

  • Step 6: Now I have a bunch of AVI clips, What next ?
Now you will want to use Adobe Premier to arrange your clips to make sense and add audio to your movie. Download Adobe Premier Trial Here:
Using Adobe Premier is fairly easy. You can also add nice scene transitions between clips in your movie. I don't want to go into all the details of using Adobe Premier here but be sure to experiment with the Transition effects. Adobe is where you will add your audio, title screens and other effects. Remember to make sure and select 30 frames a sec in video settings and "recompress" before final output. Also, remember to choose "compression" for audio files you import. Without compression your movie can get huge fast.
For details on using Adobe Premier read
    Xaez's Tutorial
I also used Animation Shop that came with PaintShop Pro to drop in screens of animated gifs like the ones in each of my movies final screens.
There are other ways to make videos as well. This is what I used. The more you work with it the better you can get with it. It does require allot of patience and time.
